When and Where to Advertise and How Much to Spend for Your Online Advertising Campaign

WHEN TO ADVERTISE ONLINE

In the traditional advertising world, the period of time to advertise is always an important quest to be considered by the advertiser. But in the internet world, your advertising campaign is up and running 24/7 in every country. The internet is a continuous advertising media that works for you round the clock even while you sleep.

When you advertise online, what carries your advertising messages is known as an online media. Online media are referred to as a general class or group such as social networking sites, social bookmarking sites, discussion forums, article directories, website directories, or search engines;  whereas the online media vehicle refers to the specific social networking site (e.g facebook), social bookmarking site (e.g digg), discussion forum (fortunebuildersteam forum), article directory (ezinearticles), and the like. It is easier and more accurate to use the terms media or medium to mean one, the other, or both.

Though, some non-continuous form of online advertising may be entirely justified. This applies mostly to online advertising campaigns preparing customers for acceptance of a new product. When such product is launched, the online advertising campaign of that product should be stopped. It also applies in the case of online advertising of special sales.

WHERE TO ADVERTISE ONLINE

In the traditional advertising world, your advertising campaign is restricted either geographically or to a class of people. But when you advertise on the internet, your advertising campaign can be viewed by anyone just about anywhere in the world. That is why I personally call it “World-Wide Webitising.” All you need do is research and select the right combination(s) of online advertising media and tools depending on your business advertising objectives. In the process of selecting the online media to use in a campaign, the advertiser MUST consider the advertising characteristics of social media networks, discussion forums, weblogs, article directories, website directories, search engines, and the other classes of online media.

Each of the online advertising media used should fit into a total advertising program designed for maximum online promotion and sales impact. I have discussed major types of online promotion media you can choose or combine for your online advertising campaigns.

HOW MUCH TO SPEND FOR YOUR ONLINE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

No business has unlimited funds or budget to spend for its advertising campaigns on the internet. Consequently, the budgeting of funds for online advertising must be properly planned. In addition, there is a fact that spending must vary with the type of product, service, or idea; the company’s brand recognition; the company’s corporate image; the internet advertising media used; the advertising objectives; and the amount of online advertising done by your competitors. This will help you define an effective budget for your online advertising campaigns.

What is Online Advertising?

Have you ever noticed that sometimes online advertising, which is also known as internet advertising, web advertising, e-advertising, or i-advertising, is confused or misunderstood in relation to some other terms, especially online marketing and online promotion. Online advertising is one part of online promotion, and online promotion is one part of the total online marketing mix. You may as well read my blog post on “What is Internet Marketing?” later to get a better understand of what online marketing is.

So what really is online advertising?

Online Advertising is the non-personal presentation to a group of internet users an openly sponsored message regarding a product, service, or ideas. This message, called an online or internet advertisement, utilizes internet media including, among other forms, banner advertising, text-link advertising, pay-per-click advertising, and social media ads, and it is paid for by the identified sponsor.

The internet users know who is behind an online advertisement because the sponsor (or advertiser) is openly identified in the advertisement. An online advertiser is the organization, company, or person that initiates an online advertisement and ultimately pays the cost.

In today’s world and in the world of tomorrow, doing a business without advertising on the internet is like working in the dark – the business owner knows what he is doing, but potential customers around the world do not. That is why I personally termed online advertising a “World-Wide Webitising.” And also, one often hears the statement that it pays to advertise online! A little reflection upon these principles of successful online advertising reveals this to be only a partial truth. Only effective online advertising actually pays.
