A lot of people have been asking me what RSS is. But before I go into the real definition, RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” but sometimes called “Rich Site Summary.”

So what is RSS?

RSS is a format to easily distribute frequently updated web contents from news-related sites, information web pages, medical web sites, weblogs, and other online contents site as an RSS Feed to a wide number of internet users. RSS allows you to update your readers automatically whenever you add a new content to your website.

RSS feeds contain a simple title, summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship, and a link to the web page with the actual information. It is placed into a single file on a web site and arranged from the newest to the oldest entry.

Repeatedly checking web sites you are interested in to see if there is any new information or content can be very tiresome. But with RSS feeds, readers can subscribe to updates from web sites and blogs of their choice and they will always be notified of new and changed contents. Or better still, they can aggregate feeds from those different web sites and blogs of their choice into one place.

Special computer programs called “RSS Aggregators” have been developed that can automatically access the RSS feeds of the different web sites and blogs. They automatically check and detect new additions, making it possible for readers to keep track of changes to multiple web sites and blogs without needing you to go through all those web sites and blogs.
